MEET THE MAKER

Trace Mayer

In 2012, while prepping a two-hundred-year-old textured frame for an art exhibition, Trace Mayer realized the frame itself outshone the oil painting it was meant to display. Inspired, Mayer's assistant crafted a small quadrangle from leftover frame corners, and Mayer added a cherished gilded bee. This felt like finding the missing piece of a puzzle for Mayer, who used his physics and fine art background to experiment with shapes and proportions, eventually gaining a devoted following for these unique creations.

Museum Bees won the Craft division of Garden & Gun's Made in the South Awards in 2023. Check out the feature here.
